Some words of advice...

"Don't try this one at home."

"Busting the fat burning soup hype."

"This was so not worth it."

"For your own safety, stay away."

"Proof why fad diets don't work."

I was entering my eighth week of my commitment to the 26 week X-weighted challenge and progressing slowly but steadily loosing an average of a pound per week through following a well balanced diet, paying close attention to portion size and exercising as much as possible when a friend told me about the "fat burning" soup diet. I won't post the recipe or the details of the diet here as you can google it yourself and find it or a variation of it. This is not a diet you can stay on over a period of time, but is a one week "boost" diet designed to give you a quick start at the beginning of a diet or as a "hump buster" to get you over the plateau stage most people experience when they've been dieting for a while. You can eat all the soup you want, the more the better, but you are limited to eating only the foods the diet specifies for each day, plus water, tea or coffee or light cranberry juice. According to claims, you can loose 10 to 12 pounds in one week if you follow it exactly.

So, with a large pot of soup simmering, I started my week of fat busting.

Day 1 - All the fruits, except bananas, I could eat plus all the soup I wanted...wasn't too hard...I love fruit and the soup was simply delicious.

Day 2 - All the veggies I wanted except corn or potato plus all the soup I wanted...boy, was I missing my usual yogurt and fruit breakfast and cravings were setting in...not for junk food but I would have killed for a slice of bread!

Day 3 - All the fruits, veggies and soup I could eat with a bonus of a potato for supper...finally some carbs...but not enough...I was feeling very tired and cranky.

Day 4 - All the bananas and skim milk I wanted (bananas never tasted so good) plus all the soup I could eat. I was on my second pot of soup at this point but it was still tasty. I was finding it very hard to do my morning walk and too tired to do much else.

Day 5 - Yea protein!!! A whopping 10 - 20 ounces of beef, sliced tomatoes and soup...I didn't eat that much meat...what I really wanted was bread to go with my soup.

Day 6 - More meat, up to 2 - 3 steaks were allowed plus all the veggies and soup I could eat.
Again, I couldn't stomach all that meat so I stuck with mostly soup and veggies and only a small steak. I was tired...tired...tired...a good time to keep your distance.

Day 7 -All the brown rice and veggies plus soup I could eat. The brown rice was welcome, but I was up to my eyeballs with soup and so glad the week was over.

What did I gain from my seven day excursion into the realm of fad dieting...nothing, but a lot of headaches, extreme fatigue, a step closer to a divorce and the grand total of a three pound weight loss which quickly turned into a one pound loss as soon as I started eating a normal diet again. Far from giving me the "boost" this diet is popular for, it set me back, so much so that two weeks later, I am still not feeling as energetic as I was prior to starting it...and I haven't lost any weight since.
The only plus to my week of torture...the experience did make a sprout and avocado sandwich taste like fine cuisine.

Bon Appétit!

Ya Hoo!!!...2 pounds this week! My biggest weekly loss so far!

Hi reaoleary,
Yes, I'm pretty sure I am getting enough calories and I'm eating nutritive dense foods high in fiber, low in fat and sugars. I think that I'm loosing at a slower rate than everyone else because I had already switched to healthier eating several years ago (and managed to loose 30 pounds at that time) so there was not a really big change in my eating habits this time round. My stubborn 15 pounds That I have regained since then are the result "letting go" over the holidays...well, actually the months leading up to the holidays too...Xmas just isn't Xmas without all the baking pies, sweets etc., not to mention the chocolates and nuts! I guess I have to be more vigilant when the holidays are here.

Anyway, I am back on track as far as eating goes and I have been counting on exercise to help me loose but it has been slow but steady. But hey, "Slow and steady wins the race!" ...it worked for the turtle...

Marissa: Are you getting enough calories during the day? There is a point (I'm not sure where it is exactly) where if you're exercising and cutting calories really aggressively , your body may kick over to starvation mode and try to keep from losing weight.

I didn't loose any weight last week which really sucks as I have been eating well and a lot less plus getting lots of exercise but maybe I can bump it up a little more this week. My total weight loss to date is only 5 pounds.

...Shoveled snow this morning for 45 minutes and went snowshoeing for 45 minutes tonight. The snow was wet and heavy so there was a good resistance. I am going to do about an hours worth of crunches and weights in front of the TV before bed.

I've also been sick Marissa. I started feeling 'off' last Monday and Tuesday and then Wednesday I woke up with a full blown head cold so missed a lot of school. I'm still feeling under the weather today even though it's a week later but I can't afford to miss anymore work! I also want to start working out again.

I lost over 8 lbs so far with this challenge. That's exciting! Averaging around 2lbs per week so if I keep that up I'll reach my goal before the end of this.

Over the nineteen years of caring for children in my home I must have developed a cast iron immune system as I seldom get sick, but when I do it usually falls on the weekend and almost never during the week. The last time I took off a "sick day" from work was probably seven or eight years ago. That's remarkable considering the number of times I am coughed, sneezed and snotted on in the run of a day.

But this latest cold bug did not pass me by. I started feeling it coming on on Friday and sure enough, I woke up Saturday morning at 6:00 feeling lousy and really pissed off...there was no way I was going let illness ruin my free time so I forced myself out of bed and went for my usual morning walk and then filled my day with baking and shopping. I made it to 5:00 before crashing for a two hour power nap after which hubby and I enjoyed a late supper while watching the movie, The Inglorious Bastards starring Brad Pit.

Sunday dawned snowy but considerably warmer than the frigid minus 20 - 30 below temperatures we've had all week. It was too fantastic of a day to pass up a chance to go cross country skiing. Not sure how far I was going to be able to make it, we set off for what turned out to be a two hour trip. It was beautiful and fun.

Happy now that the cold bug didn't steal my weekend, it can now have me ...well after I enjoy my Ginger Pork Stir fry with Rice...then it can have it's way with me.

Good for you syly_syl !
I have the same problem...there has to be only good food in the house or I will choose the bad stuff and once I start, I can't stop. I'm not too bad with sweets, but if there's a chip in the house...it's mine!

Hi Marisa (and everyone else)! I'm just noticing your posts now! I wish the site emailed you when new posts were made!

I've been doing great so far. I'm only bringing healthy groceries in the house so I'm not tempted to eat bad stuff, and I bought a lot of healthy snacks for when I feel hungry. Can't wait to weigh in tomorrow and see how I've done.

My goal for the upcoming week is to get four 1 hour workouts in :) My birthday is coming up in March so I want to be down 8 more pounds by then!

Helloooooo.......I'm beginning to feel a little lonesome here...I'm the only one posting lately. Where is everybody?

Just came in after 1 1/2 hours of shoveling snow from our entries, around the vehicles and off our back patio. We had so much we were worried about the weight on the deck. I clocked my time as intense cause boy, am I tired. I think that will be my workout for today unless I get a burst of energy later on.

Have a :) day everyone!
