Leanne

16 year old Leanne’s natural exuberance is being squelched by her worries about her weight and her parent’s declining health.

Her parents are so dissatisfied with their own bodies they no longer connect with each other. The family eats greasy takeout dinners in front of the TV, then top up with pop, chips and chocolate bars until bedtime. They spend an astounding $700 to $800 a month on convenience store junk food.

Leanne is passionate about dancing, but her heavy frame and sore joints means she lumbers instead of leaps. Compounding her misery is her dad’s rapidly deteriorating health. He suffers from diabetes, osteoarthritis and sleep disorders: This forces him to ingest powerful pain-killers and a dozen other medications. Bernard doubts he’ll live to 50 and he knows that he’s passing his deadly habits on to his beloved daughter.

This family is cracking under the strain of their combined weight issues. Bernie and Carole are ashamed of the life they have created for their daughter and are willing to do anything to turn the tide while Leanne lives in fear of losing her parents and being left alone in the world. They are all keenly aware that losing weight is the only cure for their ailing family.
