Drae

13 year old Drae is a “gentle giant” who has always been the biggest in his class and the target of bullies. Things have gotten so bad that he admits to contemplating suicide.

His dad Pat, once an avid athlete, lost a leg in an industrial accident when Drae was only three leaving him unable to participate in sports and unable to share in an active lifestyle with his son. After Pat’s accident the family turned to food for comfort and it has been their best friend ever since. Indulging in fast food several times per week, Pat and Shelly know that their toxic diet of junk is only contributing to Drae’s problems but they seem unable to stop themselves.

Drae believes that if he can lose weight the bullying will stop. He wants desperately to change his life but he can’t see how to do it unless his parents do it first.

For Drae, being overweight and the brunt of bullying is endangering his life on multiple fronts. Pat is disgusted with himself for getting so big that he can’t be an active role model for his son as a wheelchair athlete. They know that they need to find healthier outlets to bond over other than fast food and junky snacks – they are ready to put the past behind them and find a better way.
