Walk Your Family Towards Fitness
Getting your family outside to exercise needn't involve anymore effort than strapping on a pair of shoes and opening your front door. Here are some suggestions for fun waking activities designed to get everyone moving and enjoying the great outdoors.
Use the dog as an excuse. If you don't have a dog, borrow one, then head out to the nearest dog friendly beach or park for a hike. Let Fido act as motivator to get your kids off the couch.
Use a pedometer. Give everyone a pedometer and see who can take the most steps in a day, or give each member in the family a target to reach and stick a chart on the fridge door to mark their progress (you can even offer prizes for them if they meet their goals). Use your kid's naturally competitive nature to make them want to get out and exercise more.
Make walking a habit. If you turn taking an after dinner walk together in to a scheduled family activity, it can become a chance for you all to connect and explore your local neighbourhood.
Walk for charity. There are lots of different charity walks that happen across Canada. Sign up for one of these as a family, it will be a great incentive to pick up your feet.
Head inside. No need to stay inside when it is raining, you could hit an indoor track at your local rec centre or even the mall. Many malls have mapped out walking trails inside them which have the distances noted, ask at your local mall's customer service desk if they have a mall walking program you can join.
Get a change of scene. Walk on the beach, through a forest, through a new neighbourhood or anywhere at all to mix things up.
Play explorer. Get your kids to map out new walking routes at home before you go out and then test out their navigational skills when you get out there to actually walk. Show the kids Google Earth or other mapping programs so they can see what your neighbourhood looks like from the air - this is a great way to locate playgrounds and green spaces that you never knew existed before.
This post is a repeat, but look forward to more original content to come in the future.

I am looking forward to
I am looking forward to spring, so I can walk outside again! Right now our sidewalks/streets are a slushy icy mess, so treadmill is getting the attention.
Thanks for that great tip!
Thanks for that great tip! I'll pass that one along to my friends.

Google has an online pedometer which can help you figure out how long your walks/runs are. Google 'Google Pedometer' and may links for it will come up :)
Walking the dog
Does anyone have any tips for walking my dog in the winter when I can't get him to wear those little booties. We can't even seem to get around the block before he's whimpering because his feet are cold and if I try to put the little booties on he bites them until he gets them off...any ideas?
Distract him/positive association
What worked for our dog is to put them on and then immediately go for a brisk walk on leash.. He has to keep up and doesn't get the chance to chew at them. We would also put them on right before he gets his dinner, or right before we let him jump out of the car into the dog park. He now knows that the booties mean he gets to run around and play, or that it's dinner time.. He seems to realize "I put these little suckers on and good things happen to me".. :) Do invest in them, get sturdy ones that stay on.. The ones with zipper and velcro band seem to work well and are harder for them to take off.
Walking video
I have a really great video I use. (my kids can join in)
It starts at easy, mod, and hard and includes weights and also tummy time :)
The easy (not easy for me let me tell you) is a great starting point. And only takes 20 mins :)
Now who out there can't take 20 mins out of their day.
But what I like about it is you don't have to do everything perfect. I close my eyes and march way and sometimes I jog instead of walking. It feels good when I know I can out do them :)
2 weeks from now I plan on doing the moderate one (God help me)
Wintertrax for winter walking.
I received a pair of Wintertrax by Yaktrax for Christmas. I use them on my walking shoes and I don't slip or slide in the snow. I'd recommend them or something similar to anyone walking during the winter. I used to fall all the time in the winter but, so far this year, I have remained upright.
