The Science of Cravings

When you are trying to make the right choices all the time, cravings can seem to get worse, and giving in to them is one surefire way to sabotage all the hard work you've been doing.cashew

The science behind cravings says that we reach for foods that make us feel good because they give our serotonin levels (the brain chemicals that make us feel happy) an instant boost. So, we reach for that chocolate bar or pint of ice cream when we feel low - knowing that it will give us an instant high.

One way to beat cravings, is to make sure that our serotonin levels are not depleted because of things like stress, not getting enough sleep or exercise, or not getting enough Vitamin D (i.e. sunlight).

Being fatigued only makes your cravings worse, so try not to get to the point where you are starving, and therefore desperate for something to pick you up. Looking after ourselves, by not being stressed or overtired, is probably the best way we have of beating cravings.

There is another brain chemical that comes into play with cravings - dopamine. Without high enough levels of dopamine, we can feel low.

Fortunately, there are a number of foods that we can eat that will naturally raise our levels of serotonin and dopamine.

Tuck into brown rice, yogurt, cashew nuts, chicken or turkey as all of these contain the chemical tryptophan, a known mood booster. Other mood lifting foods include bananas, pumpkin seeds, avocados, and almonds - these contain the chemical tyrosine.

Really, the best way to control your cravings is to be sure to eat every three hours and make sure you never get to the point where you feel overly hungry, as this is when we are most vulnerable to cravings (and most likely to make poor choices).

Scheduled meals and snacks

Great advise. Making sure to eat every three hours certainly works for me. If I don't do this, I find I am looking for something sweet by 2 pm for a quick pick me up. But when I eat every three hours I have all kinds of energy and I don't even think about going off my eating plan. Also, I take a Vit D supplement. I can see a positive difference in my mood since I have been eating on a regular schedule and since I have been taking Vit D. My mood is pretty level, no highs and lows. Also, my cravings are alot less than what they have been in the past. It certainly makes eating clean alot easier.

Vitamin D Tablets

This article has so much truth to it! I live somewhere where it is often cloudy and dark... very little sunlight. It is amazing the effect it has on your mood... and your eating habits. I am finding that just by taking Vitamin D tablets and spending some time with a simulated sunlight lamp I am already in a much better frame of mind to exercise instead of eating junk... and once you start exercising you feel even better! The opposite of the vicious cycle!

too hungry at meal time

Good advice that I will follow - I always seem to be starved when it's finally time to eat, and then I go overboard with portion sizes as well as food choices.
