Paul Plakas Talks About Fibromyalgia
Way back in season 1, Paul Plakas caused a lot of controversy when he declared to Jannette that he didn't even think that Fibromyalgia existed. Jannette, who was in a considerable amount of pain from Fibromyalgia, was floored at his response and viewers have been writing in about it for years. “Every time that episode is shown I get a couple of emails telling me off," admits Plakas.
Plakas would like to clarify his point of view on Fibromyalgia: "It’s not that I don’t believe people have pain in their bodies, I do believe that pain exists, for sure. The thing is, what can you do about it? A lot of people have that pain and become depressed," says Plakas, "they act like there is nothing that they can do about it and wallow in their own self pity."
What Plakas wants people with Fibromyalgia to consider, is what they can actually do to alleviate the condition themselves. Most sufferers see a marked improvement when they lose weight. "A doctor could give you medication to control the pain, and often if it's severe enough they will do that," says Plakas, "but it is far better to focus on eating clean and trying to do some exercise that your body can manage. You've got to find out what you can do and take control of your life."
As usual, Plakas just doesn't like to see people using any kind of excuse for staying trapped in their body. "People use that disease to prevent themselves from doing anything. I don’t deny it exists, but what are you going to do about it?" he says.
