Paul Plakas Answers Your Questions

paulDear Paul,

I can't work out what my proper calorie intake should be. I am 5 foot 2 and weigh 155 pounds. How much should I be eating?

Use the metabolic equation that we have in the toolkit. Input all your details and the calculator will give you a rough estimate. Then you need to add to that, depending on your activity level. You need to work out how much exercise you did and how many calories that burns, and then you can add those calories to it.

The calculator will give you a basic minimum number of calories that you should be eating if you were to do no exercise at all and wanted to maintain your current weight. If you want to lose weight you need to increase the amount of activity rather than cutting back on the number of calories.

Dear Paul,

Is any kind of bread good or bad? Can people eat bread on a diet? I've also heard that sprouted grain breads are better for you, are they?

I would say that most people have a gluten intolerance, so they should try to avoid bread. Some 60% of people have a gluten intolerance, if you are one of those 40% for whom bread is totally fine just be sure to stick to whole wheat bread or multigrain varieties. Sprouted grain breads are even better for you, because they sprouted grain is easier for us to absorb and so is your best bet. If you aren't gluten intolerant you don't need to avoid bread completely, just make better choices when you eat it.

Dear Paul,

I have not been losing any weight but I have lost a lot of inches. I have lost 4.5 inches from my chest, 1 from my waist and 2 from my hips. I assumed that meant I was gaining muscle or replacing fat with muscle, but somebody commented on my blog that I can't have gained any weight from muscle in such a short time. But if that's true, why am I getting smaller when there is no weight coming off?

Generally it takes about 12 weeks of continuous hard training to notice any muscle gain on your body. I think you may possibly be measuring yourself differently this time around as it is impossible that in 3 weeks of doing the challenge you have lost 4.5 inches from your chest if you have not lost any weight. I'm sorry to say that I think that you are measuring it differently this time.

I think that the reason many people are not seeing weight loss, when they believe they are making significant changes, is that they overestimate their activity level and underestimate how much they are eating. It's as simple as this, you need to do more exercise and eat less food.

This post is a repeat, but look forward to more original content to come in the future.

Measurement accuracy

It is easy to convince ourselves that we are losing inches. When clothes start fitting, that is the better measure. If someone is not comfortable taking the measurement, it may influence the result.

Antidepressants and Weight Loss - Appetite Control

kricket posted on Paul Plakas Answers Your Questions @ 7:14am - Mar 14, 2010

Dear Paul,

I've been on antidepressants for anxiety for several years and they work well for me (anxiety runs in the family). Over several years, I gained 60 pounds. Approximately 2 years ago, I stopped the medication and within six months, lost the weight with a healthy diet and exercise routine. While on the medication, I was always hungry and never felt full. This stopped within a few weeks of stopping the antidepressants. Unfortunately, I had to start taking the medication again for anxiety - stressful career, long working hours - and have gained 30 pounds over the past year. Again, I don't feel full and the evening is the worst time.

Do you have any advice as to how to suppress the hunger caused by the antidepressants? I've tried changing medications but this has been only somewhat helpful. I've also spoken to a couple of physicians but they don't have any answers other than I'll have to live with the weight gain and side effects.

curb my appetite

Hi Paul,

I just started my weight loss journey and I find myself hungry quite often, so my question is, Are there any appetite suppressing foods, vitamins or minerals that I could be using to suppress my appetite? I do not like the feeling of being hungry, and I am not starving myself I eat breakfast, lunch and dinner. But, after dinner I do not eat again for the rest of the night, which is when temptation and hunger set in. Any help would be appreciated. I've looked in to Johnson's Appetite Suppresant and would like to know your thoughts on the matter.

Sincerely,
ShannieG

I was curious as to why when I am losing weight I will stay the same for say 2 weeks then have a significant drop of 4-5 lbs all at once. Is this just the cycle my body goes through as it loses. Just thought you might have a better explanation. The weight stays off too after I lose it just to clarify.

Thanks

Sarah

Training for a triathalon

Tracy posted on Paul Plakas Answers Your Questions @ 3:43pm - Feb 22, 2010

Dear Paul,

My goal is to do a triathalon this July. I have started running on my treadmill. I am planning to start swimming this week, and when the snow melts, I will start biking.
There is so much information out there on how to train for a triathalon, I am not really sure what is right for me.
Today when I was running, my calf muscle suddenly cramped on me, and it still hurts. I take time to warm up, and stretch afterwards. What happened?

stomach fat

Dear Paul,
I am 48 years old. Over the years I have slowly gained weight. I have always had slender hips and somewhat muscular legs. I have tried really hard excercising 4 times a week, 20-30 minutes (sit ups, etc), plus walking the dog for an hour 4-5 times a week, on flat ground. Trouble is, I feel stronger and healthier, but the inches only come off my hips and legs. My stomach is where I want to lose, but it doesn't seem to ever budge! When I was younger and slim, I always had a bit of a pot belly. My stomach is starting to get larger than my hips. Should I just accept that this just comes with age?

Fat on females

I think that is is a common problem for females and we do not always want to work out hard enough or long enough to start burning that stubborn fat.

HI, I have the same problem too. I have noticed some differnce when i drink green tea, with an added flavor, like green tea and blubeary. It will not make youre tummy become smaller overnight, but I think that it does help with diet and exercise. I also hate my tummy fat.
