Fat pants are a safety net. I do not know one single person, who has kept their fat pants in the closet, that hasn’t had to use them again. Here’s why you need to ditch them:
- Fat clothes give us permission to be depressed and eat more than we should.
- Fat clothes give us permission to eat that popcorn that we know we shouldn’t when we are watching TV every night.
- Fat clothes give us permission to accept who we used to be, instead of moving forward with the person we want to be.
- Fat clothes tend to be stretchy, so regardless of how much weight you are gaining again, they will always fit you and be comfortable.
It’s a heck of a lot easier having more faith in the person that you knew you were instead of having more faith in the person that you are trying to become. If you are having a bad day, aligning yourself with that fat depressed person whose clothes are still hanging in the back of the closet, it's really easy to go back there.
Keeping hold of those fat clothes is just a bad idea because it is a sign that you are truly not letting go. The whole weight-loss journey isn’t just about losing a few pounds and feeling better about yourself, or putting on lipstick and getting a new haircut – it's about redefining who you are.
As long as you are holding on to these mementoes of your former fat self, you’re not really letting go of that person and becoming the person that you deserve to be. It’s also dangerous because the longer you hold onto them, the greater the chance that you’re going to need them again.

The comparison pant
I notice that there is always one pair that is shown as a this is where I came from pant. I did get rid of most of my largest size but did have some around for the short time I went up one size. It is hard sometimes to let things go and we must strive to do better.
New wardrobe
I'm there too. I need a whole new wardrobe. Thank goodness for secondhand store. And since I have a few more pounds to go.. I'll buy some to keep me over till I reach my goal which is not too far away. I feel like am 30 again....
Not looking back!!
This really struck a cord with me. Just this past weekend I gave away all my clothes that I was wearing 40 lbs ago! When I mentioned this to my mother in law she said...." You might need to ask for them back" I was shocked and said that just because I have lost and gained weight in the past it doesn't mean that I won't keep it off. I KNOW I have changed and now don't want to ever go back to my old habits! The difference is how good I feel eating nutritious foods and feeling satisfied without being deprived! I will not look back!
Keep the faith
Every time we try we keep learning more that should keep us from gaining back big time.
I'm a little confused. Does
I'm a little confused. Does this mean I am not supposed to own sweatpants at all?
Or are we limiting this to jeans and trousers?
Admittedly when my trousers don't fit I end out in my sweatpants, but even when my trousers do fit, I still use sweatpants for sports, yard work, and cold weather walks with the dog...
Sweat pants
I agree that sweat pants serve a purpose. As long as we realize that it is not our goal to grow back into them, we should be able to make some choices that fit for us.
thanks . yes i passed them on
thanks . yes i passed them on it kinda saddend me to do this at the same time wishing the recipients were on the same journey and didnt need them.
the one thing i am sooo looking forward to buying at the end is a brand new custom fit bra!!! the men have nooo idea what a good fitting bra does for a lady in so many ways and its hard to find one that says this is me! too big, too small too ugly sigh.. yup the bra's the thing! right ladies??
Sell your fat clothes!
Take them to a consignment store and sell them! I usually make a couple hundred bucks a season selling my clothes and it helps to pay for the new ones.
Great idea...
.... we actually have a blog post coming up about doing just that.
Thrift Stores Are Your Friend...
Now, I don't mean you should buy bras, underwear or socks at a thrift/goodwill store but great cheap clothing can be found to hold you over until you are at goal weight. I have outfitted myself quite stylishly during my weigh loss journey using thrift/goodwill store clothes and hand-me-downs. Actually, some of the clothing has been brand new with original tags still attached. I receive compliments all the time about my clothes. You do need some time to go cull through the clothing but you will find your budget will not suffer if you become a discriminating thrift store buyer.
And I agree 100% about getting rid of the fat clothing. As soon as a piece of clothing becomes lose out it goes--sometimes back to the thrift store from where it came. :)
fat pants
it is very expensive on a weight loss journey....I spent 100 bucks on 2 new bra's yesterday. Normally I go to Walmart and get whatever I can get to fit but I went to a store and measured for a proper fit so the ladies are where they are supposed to be. Also, I am down several sizes of pants but who can afford to keep buying jeans so my pants are going to have to be baggy until I can fit into the 18's that were snug yesterday.
WTG catattack1 !!!
going, going, gone
Hey Cattatack -congrats!
-And someone else can always use your once-upon-a-time clothes in their weight-loss journey. If they're in a thin person's closet, no one can use them. Think of it as saving the universe from wasted clothing!
LOL
I love it! Saving the universe 1 pound at a time.
fat pants
they are gone!!!!
but its getting expensive the smaller i get lol. i HAVE to keep buying clothes lol going from a size 28 to a size 12 is a big diffence :0)
What a success
Isn't it great that you have been so successful. There is always some downside.
