Motivational Spotlight: How Challenge Participant Sarah Maschke Lost 136 Pounds
Sarah Maschke (username iyamamaschke) knew exactly how to be healthy. “At age 18 I was a bodybuilder, so I’d always known what I should be doing and what I should be eating but I had completely let myself go,” she says, “knowing and doing are two completely different things.”
Maschke let herself go until she reached the point where her body had stopped functioning how it was supposed to. It hurt to walk and she felt terrible all the time. “I got up to 302 pounds, and was just disgusted in myself. I reached rock bottom and in October 2004, I decided to finally do something about it,” she says.
Examining the Reasons
“My starting point was that I had to sit down and really look at what I was doing,” says Maschke. She knew that her eating was emotional (chocolate was her downfall) and that she ate mostly because she was alone all the time looking after her 3 young children. “My husband was working away all the time, I was very lonely and all I would do was eat,” she says.
Knowing that her eating habits had to change, Maschke struggled to get her cravings under control. “I started eating lower carbs, cutting out breads and pastas because someone had told me I should try the South Beach Diet. That was the first diet I tried and it worked really well,” she says.
Maschke walked on her treadmill, which was the only way she could get any exercise having 3 little ones in the house (her youngest was just 4 months old when she started her journey). Initially, she was only able to walk for 10 minutes at a time because of the pain in her feet, but was able to walk more as she started to see the results of her hard work. Eventually Maschke was jogging on the treadmill and incorporating weights into her home routine.
Taking it off
Maschke kept at her plan for 18 months and in that time lost 100 pounds. “Then I stalled out for a long time, I just didn’t want to do it anymore,” she says. However, over the next 3 years, she was able to keep that 100 pounds off.
“I was looking for something to push myself farther, then this X-Weighted Challenge came about,” says Maschke, who had been a fan of the show for years and had applied to be a participant but unfortunately didn’t live close enough to where the show was being filmed.
“I always watch the show. I love X-Weighted because you get to see the person on TV going through the same trials and tribulations that you are going through, that is why watching it motivates me,” she says.
Since joining the Challenge, Maschke has got back on track with her weight-loss and managed to lose a further 36 pounds. She is actively participating in the community groups and has made a real life friend from those groups. “Doing this enables me to challenge myself more and it just came around at the right time. The prizes also motivate me,” she admits.
Staying Motivated
Maschke knows that she has already come so far. She has had friends not recognize her after losing so much weight. “It feels good when they don’t recognize me. I feel amazing,” she says, “right now, I’m in the best shape that I’ve ever been. I just bought myself a running watch and saw that I was running a 9-minute mile!”
Although her weight loss was pretty steady in the 18 months where she lost that 100 pounds, Maschke says that the most she ever lost was 15 pounds in one month, and on average it was between 6 and 8 pounds a month. “There were lots of times where I was just sitting there and I was just so frustrated thinking “Well, what am I doing wrong? Why aren’t I losing weight?” and then all of a sudden I’d lose 2 pounds. My weight fluctuated all the time,” she says.
Maschke says that in order to succeed, you can’t let the mistakes you make sabotage your efforts. “Don’t ever give up. A lot of people start out trying but they give in when they mess up, they throw in the towel. I screwed up lots too with my eating and stuff, but I just never gave up,” she says, “you just have to keep pushing yourself to do your very best. It has taken me a long time to lose this weight, but you can’t do it in a day or a month.”

Awesomeness!
That is awesome! just the extra push I needed!
'thanks for the inspiration.
'thanks for the inspiration. I am down about 21lbs since Jan 1 of this year, and I know I can do it and reading your story gives me the confidence to keep on going. It was slow starting, I think I had to talk my brain into the lifestyle change, now it is getting easier. I have a long way ahead of me, but it took years to put on the weight, it will probably take a year to get it off.
Just the kick I needed
Thank you for sharing your story...it's the kick in the butt I needed. I lost 95lbs about 2 years ago but also lost my want and drive, so I stopped doing "good" for myself. I've never regained the weight I lost, but been toying with the idea to shed a few pounds more. Tonight it's a circut workout for this bod!!!
uplifting
i am very happy that u told us your story its very uplifting and motivating everything u said is so true but what got to me is when u make a mistake to just keep going and to never give up. i think im going to post this on my wall at home. u look great. keep it up and stay blessed thank u again for your story!!!!
truly an inspiration!
wow! great for you! I am happy that this turned out to be a great success for you. Reading your story truly inspired me! There are many times, when I wanted to lose weight and thought to myself I'll start tomorrow..and when tomorrow came I thought to my self I'll start tomorrow..and so on and so on.. Most of the time when I was on "my diet", I would "fall off the wagon, but only for a day", and then two days, and then three.. and so on again. I would get extremely frustrated and then wonder why I didn't lose any weight and give up. But thanks for your inspiring story. Because it is possible, and we will all get there.... :)
Amazing
You are an amazing inspiration. You look incredible and I hope that I have your determination and will power!! I know it's not an easy road and I know that I will struggle but I want to look amazing and feel amazing...thank you for your words of inspiration!!
Truly Inspirational
I am very inspired by your story. Some people say that it is easier to do the workouts when your a stay at home parent, but, this I know isn't true because I have been there before. Being at home with your kids is just like having a job. Right now I'm finding it hard to get the motivation to workout before or even after work. I have tried many times to take the weight off but have failed and after seeing this challenge I plan to continue with my goal of being healthy again! Thank you again for your truly inspiring story!
Thank you for helping me
Thank you for helping me understand the true scope of the journey that I am undertaking. It is so empowering to understand that someone who really did it also went through weight fluctuations and plateaus. When I reach this point I will know that I'm not a failure, I am still on the path to success!!
I needed to read this! Thank
I needed to read this! Thank you!
ps... you look great!
amazing
After a hellish 3 yrs I am finally ready to lose the weight. It is good to see such inspirational stories of success. I have no real support in this goal (no friends or family around). All I have is my own motivation but at the end of the day I am the only one who can do it. I have committed to myself and I will succeed. It is my gift to myself.
Way to go!
This is really a great story. I too am in a similar situation....I have lost and maintained an 80 lb weight loss, but have been "stuck" at my current weight for 18 months now. I have 35 or so more pounds to lose, so I'm hoping that joining the X weighted Challenge will really give me that boost to finish the job.
I was so happy to read this story, and thank you greatly for sharing your story!
Amazing transformation
You have had so many successes- losing the weight, and maintaining the big loss and then to lose significantly again. Do you have a particular goal in terms of the weight numbers or inches?
I don't really have a goal.
I don't really have a goal. I want to feel good in my own skin. I am just about there, just about just need to tweak a bit on my body. I guess in terms of weight I thought 154 would be good unless I think I need to lose a bit more. As of now I am just concentrating on my running and weight training, eating has been perfect since January so no worries there.
I just go day to day and I am not putting huge demands on myself in terms of weight loss if my clothing feels better then I know I am doing it right.
Doing it Right
It sounds like you have the right idea. I am waiting to see where my weight loss stops as well. What is your running goal? Do you have any issues with running?
you look amazing. i have hit
you look amazing. i have hit that brick wall right now but not giving up just switching things up and it will get out of my way. congrats :0)
Never Give up, if you give up
Never Give up, if you give up on you who are you going to depend on. You are the only one who can make changes in yourself ultimately.
I have had a lot of things happen to me, people I know are amazed how I did it. I was diagnosed with a Brain Tumor 4 years ago, I have hypothyroid disease, as well as an auto immume disorder. If I let that get in the way and gave up I would have been where my doctors said I would be, in a wheelchair.
You can do it!!!!
Thank You
It has been a long road but, I am determined to get there. I always remember I never got this way over night and I am not perfect but, if I stay the course and try my hardest I can and will achieve anything I want. I have a full photo journal if anyone is interested. www.iyamamaschke.shutterfly.com
Check it out. If I inspire just one person this article was worth it.
Way to Go!
You did amazing at your weightloss! It's motivating to me, because I too am stuck home alone all the time with my nine month old. Not that I don't love it or anything, it just gets lonely sometimes. Good for you!
Sarah giving us motivation!
Good going Sarah! Very inspiring! We are all worth the effort and to feel that good!
Being worthwhile
This is a really good point! One has to remember that is worth hanging in there when it seems that we are in the minority of eating practices.
