January National Challenge Check-in

logoHere we are already at the end of January and consequently about to start week 4 of the X-Weighted National Challenge, and what a 3 weeks it has been!

There are more than 4200 people signed up for the National Challenge. We were floored by the number of people that turned up for our weigh-in events across Canada.

Challenge participants are losing lots of weight already! (Have you checked out the map that shows you how much weight is being lost province by province?)

People are forming support groups and helping each other to stay motivated. There are almost 200 community groups that people have started. You can join as many groups as you like, so be sure to utilize these as much as you can.

michelle sterlingMichelle has lost 17 pounds since the challenge started, here's how she has managed such amazing weight-loss...

"It has been relatively easy because I am still remembering how hard that fitness test was. I have cut out all "white" in my eating, which in itself makes me feel really good. I have more energy and don't seem to get down about the weather as much.

I try to do at least 30 minutes of cardio 6 out of 7 days. My goal of losing 70 pounds by July is a large goal, and sometimes I don't know if I can achieve it, but then I kick myself and tell myself that there isn't anything I can't do if I try hard enough.

My fitness goal is to take off at least 90 seconds off the fitness challenge. That was the only goal on the list that really meant something to me. The contest aspect is a good challenge also, I want to beat as many people as I can but in the end it is only myself that I need to win over.

I will hit the wall sooner or later but I am riding the easy road until that time hoping that all this good I am feeling will keep me from falling down."

Please comment below to tell other participants how well you have done, so that you can be a source of inspiration like Michelle.

Some great stories here and great challenges but we each can do it but have to remember we are all different and shouldn't compare our success with that of others. I agree, this challenge site is great for inspiration and motivation but I know that the biggest thing is that I am accountable for myself. That's not always easy and has been my downfall in the past. I was with Weight Watchers at one time and when I quit was when I put the weight back on. It wasn't because I quit but because I lost the support of like minded people and this is what this site has given me again.
For those with late night issues, I really believe you can't talk yourself out of thinking about food so what might work instead is taking up a hobby or taking a course or something that takes your mind completely off the cravings. It's also important that you're feeding YOUR body properly throughout the day so you know that it's not really hunger but boredom or fear or some other 'emotion' that feels like hunger.
I wish you all the best and, like you, I am grateful for the support I find here. Good luck in week 4!

Determined

Hi!
I have lost 6lbs so far - not a huge amount but the fact that I am still determined so far is a huge difference. I usually start a "diet" every Monday - get discouraged by Wednesday and quit by Saturday.

This site is giving me some inspiration I haven't had before. I check the blogs daily and reading about everyone's challenges and successes has kept my motivation up.

I am joining a gym and plan to go right after work so there's no chance of making excuses once I get home. I hope to get my husband and son a membership too (this gym has an area for children 8-14 to work out too!).

Have a great week everybody!

Slow going

Hi, my problem has been NOT eating! Haven't eaten regular breakfast or lunch for 25 years. Then I get home from work at 9:00 and eat supper at 10:00. Bad idea. So I have slowly gained 50 pounds over the 25 yrs. I have started to eat something during the day, like one of those little oatmeal pckages at 10:00am (nauseated if i eat earlier) then a shake at 2 or so. I find my metabolism is probably improving and I actually felt hungry on thursday. That's new for me. Didn't even know why I felt light headed and weird in my stomach until one of my co-workers said "perhaps you are feeling hunger llike normal people" :-)

Anyway 1st week lost nothing:-( Second week 2 lbs. Third week only a pound and a half. As I said ...really slow. I need to get my exercises more organized though. Time is my enemy with long work hours and some volunteer stuff. If anyone wants to help me kick my own butt, feel free:-)

slow going

Have you tried a smoothie in the morning?
There are certain things I can't eat in the morning either.

Sorry, saved twice

I have the food thing down but the weight seems to be slowly coming off. I am running a least 3 times a week and doing an ab workout as well but I am breastfeeding and heard it can take a little longer to shed the pounds. I hope so. I don't want to be discouraged since I lost all this weight before I was pregnant and now I have to do it all over again:(
I am still postive though!!!
Good luck to everyone

I am impressed

It's not just you..

lolaG posted on January National Challenge Check-in @ 7:06pm - Jan 29, 2010

I agree with you completely..I have the exercise thing pretty much down, but it's the food that I am struggling with....Uggghhh..FRUSTRATING... I did really well the first week and then completely fell off the bandwagon week 2 and GAINED weight...that sucked...but I am working hard..and I am sure I'll get the hang of it...if other people can do it, then so CAN I!!!

Its like reading about my life..lol

AWESOME

Iyamamaschke posted on January National Challenge Check-in @ 10:37am - Jan 29, 2010

I have no trouble with the exercise even working 12 hour shifts it's hard but, I do manage. Sometimes I am so tired I just don't want to do it but, I keep getting on with it. I think the eating is the hardest to stay consistant at. I work nights and that has to be the worst, and the hardest for staying on track.

My moods have lifted even though I have not lost a bunch of weight my clothing is fitting better and I am up to running 8.35 miles in one stint. Not bad for a 185lb girl. I run with a 10 lbs weighted vest so I think I am putting on muscle mass.

I need to come up with a better plan to manage my eating also my binge eating disorder. Something goes off in my head and it's like I don't even know what I am doing. I would love a buddy to help me with this.

Great job everyone. I have 31 lbs to go to get to my goal. I will keep working!!

Sarah

Sarah, I also work night

kayjay posted on January National Challenge Check-in @ 11:11am - Feb 1, 2010

Sarah, I also work night shifts and some day shifts, I find it difficult to stay on a program sleeping in the day and up all night. My last nights I took fruit along with a sandwich or soup, I also drink water on nights. I too have a binge eating disorder, it started a long time ago and I put on 60+ lbs. I not sure why it happened , I quess it just did. I find this site gives me the inspiration to watch what I eat and I have started to exercise again, I use to, then got away from it. I wish you lots of success in your weight loss. We can't give up. Kathy

binge

michelle_nanaimo posted on January National Challenge Check-in @ 2:06pm - Jan 29, 2010

I am a recovering eating disorder person myself...you name it and I have suffered from it in the last 25 yrs. Do you take vitamins especially at this time of year? The B vitamin's are really important for those of us who are mood oriented people. Your exercise helps too. Have you a food journal? I write down everything I eat and when I eat it and when I have had a binge at some point in time I take note of the time, what it was, why I think I did it and figure out a way to correct it for next time. Journals for thoughts as well as food and exercise help keep me accountable to myself to reach my goals. Also have a treat day as that might help the binges.
I hope one of these can help!
Michelle

I am in the same boat

I hear ya - everyday I start out good and I can make up to supper...but after that...it is a free for all...lol..writing in my food journal helps a little bit. good luck with your weight loss journey sounds like you are doing good so far...

Maybe

Iyamamaschke posted on January National Challenge Check-in @ 2:05pm - Jan 29, 2010

Maybe we should be facebook buddies we could really help each other out. It's great for motivation as well. Let me know if you are interested.

It seems to me that nights are a huge trigger. I am good all day then it hits a certain time and I think I need to eat everything including the house. I get so mad at myself but, don't even realize what I ate with the compusive nature of this disease. It is a fight ever day.

I have a lot of medical issues as well which don't help ACK...I have a brain tumor, under control so far that makes me produce prolactin so my body thinks it's pregnant all the time. Makes me very hungry. I also have an Autoimmune disorder, they call it multi system and if I don't exercise I am very weak I need to build muscle or my body just destroys me. I also have hypothyroidism and Pernicious Anemia. SO every day I live with pain and every day I get out there work and run like I won't be able to do it tomorrow. I know weight loss and exercise has made the most dramatic change in my condition there are no questions about that.

At my heaviest of 302 I thought I would die every morning actually wished for death. Now, even though I still need to lose more. WOW I mean WOW I can move and am in awesome shape for my size.

Thought I would give you a brief history there's more but, I could write a book ROFL!!

for sure

What a great story Michelle! That is awesome. I need someone to come and kick my butt. I'm doing great with eating proper foods, just can't get motivated to exercise. I'll get it soon. Keep up the good work!!

Love it!

I am down 5 pound since we started, which is big for me. After losing 80 pounds I had hit a wall ove rthe last 2 years and hadn't managed to see the numbers drop. THe challenge is really helping me push a little harder to see the snumbers go down, and providing me with lots of great recipes and some amazing support from different community groups. I am LOVING it so far!!

well done you

Mabye deactivate their accounts if they don't respond by the end of the challenge so they don't mess up the results and winners?

It isn't going to mess up anybody's results

lola posted on January National Challenge Check-in @ 7:52am - Jan 29, 2010

and I'm sure that they will realize soon enough. And if they don't realize because they aren't weighing in, then they'll be out of the Challenge anyway.

I've messsaged people and put notes in groups

lola posted on January National Challenge Check-in @ 2:37am - Jan 29, 2010

but those people need to contact me to change their weights as I have no idea what their real weight is unless they tell me.

Many of those people have private profiles too, which makes it harder for me to contact them about this.

Is there a way for you to check the weight loss? There are still people listed as losing 150 - 200+ pounds. It screws up the results for everyone and for the provinces.
