How the Community Groups Help You Stay Motivated
Seeing how many participants are utilizing the Community Groups function of XWeighed.com is truly fantastic!
Because of this, we are hoping that next time we run the Challenge (fingers crossed that we'll be able to do it again next January) we intend to have increased group functionality and the ability to message your friends/ fellow group members directly.
We spoke with a couple of the participants who are active in the groups to see how they were doing.
Tawney Johnson (aka Tpartee) is an active member of the Yummy Mommies and says, "I love my group of ladies! I am getting a tremendous amount of support from my fellow members. Through the group I have made some really genuine connections with women that are going through the exact same struggles that I have in the past, or will eventually go through - such as the inevitable plateau."
She says that she has met some phenomenal women in her group: "You can actually see their mental transformation, which is such a huge part of the whole weight loss process, through their blogs."
Tawney thinks that her success so far is partially due to being a member of the group. "We are very supportive of each other, and I personally feel that whole Karma thing plays a big part, as in I get online daily and like to encourage any members that need it on their blogs, because I know that there are days I will need some encouraging words too."
Needless to say, Tawney is really enjoying being part of the Challenge. "I am loving this Challenge, not only for the chance to win some fabulous prizes - I'm shooting for the makeover in TO and the chance to meet Fred - but for the added support it offers with all the tools, camaraderie, and the tracking tools which help us to see our progress. Personally this Yummy Mommy knows that the challenge is a huge motivational factor in my personal journey to a happier healthier me."
Kathleen McCabe (aka KathleenM) is in 2 groups: Cowtown Cuties and Calgary Girls Gone Slim. "I have been getting support from a few members who have read my blog. I met one girl at the first weigh in and she is very nice, we have gone for a walk together. Another girl is one I know already, so yes, relationships are building."
Kathleen says that she enjoys how the groups function and the ability to see how others in her groups are doing. "Overall I think that the Challenge is great and I am having a lot of fun. I am going to try to plan a hike in the spring with some of the participants," she says.
Betty Tercier (aka Betty) is also in 2 groups: the Saint John "Losers" and 50 Pounds to Lose. In the groups she has connected with people, and says, "We have become a group of "solution finders", instead of just whining about the things we find challenging, emotional eating for instance, we discuss the challenge and brainstorm for ideas to solve the issues. It makes a big difference when you focus on the solution and not the frustration or problem."
On bad days, Betty says that the groups help her know that she is not alone in the struggles of losing weight.
"I am really enjoying the challenge mostly because it has given me the motivation to get "IT" done," says Betty, "I find the support, tools and tips from X-Weighted to be very helpful."
What groups are you in? Are you finding the groups useful? Tell us below....

Oh yes
Definitely the groups help me a lot. This past week has been a real bad one for me and mass reading these blogs is really helping too. I mean look at all the information I am getting, it is rather harder to cheat when I have been getting encouraged by 20 something blogs a day!!
accountability
True that groups help a lot. makes me accountable for what I'm doing. You get people to talk and help eachother even when things aren't that great.
You see how easy and how tough things may be. It helps you see your bad week is NOT the end of the world. You get energy from the others.
Sad that some group become almost inactive.
I am a member of a few. Usually there is some activity in one of them.
Go go everyone, this is a wonderfull journey!
It's Amazing!
I've gained a real sense of accountablity by joining my group. I never thought it would have been so helpful!
Some groups more active than others
I joined a third group and discovered that there is so much more input in that group that the other two. It is a really neat experience.
Great to feel involved.
It is wonderful not to be alone in the challenge. It is not clear who is and who is not losing which takes some pressure off. i did feel badly when I started with the wrong weight and had to show a gain while everyone else was losing or so it seemed.
Group interaction is always a great motivator!
I agree that group interaction helps people to re-motivate and stay focused. If you're getting it from a blog, that's great!
I personally get a lot more out of the interaction I get with the people at the local Y. I've been going there for over a year now and have gotten to know a lot of people during my workouts. I really like the face time, and seeing how much weight others have lost at the gym (that's a great motivator in itself).
Get your group interaction any way you can, and keep losing!
I LOVE this place!
I think without the groups comments to keep going and stay strong, i would have quit (again) by now. I always lose focus and interest when it comes to losing weight, but people really help you stay motivated and give great support! I LOVE this place!
I agree
I agree being part of group is inspiring and motivating! I love Yummy Mommies everyone is so wonderful and supportive!
Groups
I agree that the groups are one of the best things about this challenge!!! You can go in and read about other's day's and help out if they are needing a helping hand or a caring heart!!!
Tpartee your so
Tpartee your so fantastic...You truly inspire lots of ladies with your kind and fantastic words. Your always there with a great little pep talk or motivation.
I to love this x-weighted challenge. I knew I had to to keep up on the weightloss because of the diabetes. But I could see myself slipping back into some old terrible habits. This gave me the motivation to keep on going with this and I to have met some totally awesome and fantastic friends here as well, including you. I love getting to know people and chat and read their stories.
It's great to read how other people are struggling just like me or sharing in each others success. It's great to find people I have so much in common...
We all can accomplish our goals together.
like i said...
phenomenal women! TY so much and keep rocking it out, girl!!!
Love the groups...
I am finding that I can always count on someone from my groups to provide support and encouragement when I'm having a bad day and celebrate together on the good days...and I try to do the same for others.
Knowing there are other people out there with similar goals and their own challenges makes me feel less alone in this journey.
It is sometimes hard to get the support you need from the people close to you (often, they have contributed to the unhealthy lifestyle the "old" me lived). The community is a great place to find people to support the "new" me!
great folks
The group I post with is just lovely but the group and blog interfaces are a bit clunky so I'm really glad to hear that you are thinking about improvements.
I have to say that the tech helpers of this site are wonderful. Twice I've had problems and I've had a response within 24 hours.
Groups are Great
Nice work everyone- the group postings are super to read!
Groups rock
The groups are what keep me coming back to the site day after day. I think increased functionality would be fantastic, as it is the one big hole in the site.
So far it looks like the Halifax group might be running in the bluenose marathon together, and I've found a local running buddy in my Dartmouth group. Overall, I find them really helpful!
These ladies rock!
I love the groups. I read through blog entries and comments every day. I'm in the same groups as Tawney and Kathleen and they really boost everyone in the group! They are a motivating couple of ladies.
awww...thx!
Thx CaraC!!!
Agreed!
I totally agree! I check in several times a day (when I can!!) just to see how everyone is feeling and when I see triumphs - and struggles - it reminds me that we are all in the same boat, fighting the same fight every single day.....I have really made some awesome connections and heard about some great events, excellent recipes and simple ideas to just make life easier. The more support the greater our chances of success!
YEAH US!!!
i love the group support - it really keeps me on track. i like coming to read other people's blogs and weighing in (pun fully intended - hahaah) on them. and the support on my blogs is so encouraging.
this is a journey ... and like any journey .. it's way easier with a buddy .. or 500. so thanks everyone!!
together - we will do this .. so yeah for us!!
Mid challenge fatigue
We need to keep each other motivated at this point. There does not seem to be as much action on the blogs now.
