Fred Connors Talks About Haircuts that Wow, Whatever Your Size

I think that when it comes to hair, one of the biggest challenges that people with bigger bodies face is proportion. Curvy bodies require curvy hair, that's just the way it is. The shorter or flatter the hair, the smaller the head becomes in relation to the rest of the body. So, if you have a full figure, there should always be fullness in the hair. There is no prescribed hair-do that is best for someone that is bigger, but certainly the relationship between the shape of the hair and the body needs to be considered.

Your Body Dictates What Your Hair Can Do

One of the reasons that the participants end up looking so great on the show, is that I always take in to consideration what their body says that their hair can do. Typically this means that the hair comes out from the face instead of into the face which is softer, a lot more flattering, and sexier. The hair always moves around and has fullness.

Typically, if there is a lot of weighty hair, it creates thickness in the neck area, so hair needs to be very soft there. What happens is women that have too much hair and a full figure with a large bust line end up looking like a head and two boobs - you can't really see anything in between.

One of the biggest mistakes that people make is to get very short cropped hair, which makes them look like a head on a big round body.

Great Hair Boosts Self Esteem

Often people that are struggling with their weight are struggling with the image that they are projecting as well, and so they get to a point where they think, why bother? Why bother getting a decent haircut when I can't make the rest of me look good. Well, we all deserve to have compliments, whether that compliment comes from a great haircut or the lipstick you are wearing, compliments make a huge impact on your self-esteem. Because of that, I think getting a great haircut is one of the best things you can do if you are on a weight loss journey, it gives you something to feel good about. It is an immediate boost: It only takes an hour to get that haircut and a lot longer to lose 10 pounds.

Nima, the Perfect Example

One of the biggest changes on the show was with Nima, from season 2. Nima wore her hair very long, in a pony tail and always felt like she had beautiful hair, like "I've got beautiful hair so I'm just going to grow it long and it will be even more beautiful", but it stopped being beautiful and just looked like long creepy hair. (Scroll over Nima's picture to see her hair before Fred worked his magic for her reveal.)

Nima wanted to project an image that was more youthful and sexy, even though she wasn't overly successful on her weight loss journey. She was able to project an image that was more consistent with how she wanted to feel on the inside, and if her hair hadn't been cut to better reflect her height and size, she wouldn't have been able to do that.

A hairstyle that looks like you've invested a little bit of something in yourself, instead of rolling out of bed and looking like you don't care, says a lot about who you are. Participants going through a weight loss journey are typically doing so because they want to start feeling better about themselves, and they need to start communicating that to people around them by projecting an image that reflects their desire to do that.

This post is a repeat, but look forward to more original content to come in the future.

Hahaha, well, i've gone and done it

anyway! Get my hair cut short that is. I cut it short about 5 or 6 mths ago, and i knew that i was running the risk of looking like my head was a bowling ball perched on top of a washing machine, lol, but it was something i just had to do. I wanted to use it as motivation to move towards my goals. I had actually kept it long for all those years because i did not want to look funny, and knew i needed proportion--but i love my short hair, and the more weight that comes off i think the better i look! Lol, i hope Fred agrees with me when i get to see him!
i actually just got it cut again today, i love it!

I have thin, curly, coppery redhair. Of course I have always longed for poker straight dark brown hair in a swingy bob, LOL>

Best describes my hair.. but it's a fragile curl and doesn't keep much body. My hair is very thin and fine so theres just not enough there to make it look decent. I've struggled with it my whole life, had everything from super long to boy short. Nothing works. Add to that the fact that I'm not one of those people who are good at doing hair and it's just an utter disaster most days. I'm tempted to just cut it off and wear a hat.

Well Fred, I must say that after the cut and color you gave me for the makeover after our journey, I felt like a million dollars! I never realized what a difference a stylish, suitable hair cut could make. Sadly, I have never been able to replicate exactly, your styling (even with help from the hairdressers) and when I regained weight while pregnant with my son, I let everything (including my hairstyle) go to the dogs. I am feeling so horrible these days!! I was talking with some friends the other day and mentioned that if I ever win the lottery, I am going to try and book you for a one-on-one clothes shopping, make-over trip here in Kelowna. And I would get you to teach me how to do my hair myself :) Thank you for the memories Fred, and my gorgeous "after" pictures that I treasure...

Change

I really need a change after this adventure - i have looked the same for the past 15 years - (I was a teen) time for a change and great look before my trip tp Vegas in Oct 2010

Bad hair

My hair is fine and frizzy most of the time. I think it is my worst feature besides my weight and no matter what cut I get I never seem to have nice looking hair. Does anyone have any suggestions for hair styles or products for this type of hair?

Sometimes I don't recognize me!!!

you know - a few months ago I ran into a lifetime friend of the family whom I hadn't seen in awhile. When he didn't speak I was a bit surprised and then miffed as he continued to chat up the person I was with. When finally she said "you know Shelley don't you?" - he stuck out his hand and said "no.... I don't believe we have met"

i have to admit - sometimes I look in my closet or in the mirror and have the same experience! The other day I took a pair of jeans out of my college and put it in the kid's drawer. when he brought them back in to me a couple of days later i sad they are not mine - to which he replied that the were sure as hell not his with the stitching onthe pockets - lo and behold they were mine - they just looked so SMALL!!!!!!!

My hair is thin, flat and

My hair is thin, flat and very very straight. Short or long, it doesn't look any different. No exactly uplifting image for looking my best .....

I have the opposite. Thin and frizzy. I find that hot rollers help. Does your hair hold a curl? Try hot rollers they are a quick way to pick up some style in a hurry.

what are you waiting for

majorsmith posted on Fred Connors Talks About Haircuts that Wow, Whatever Your Size @ 11:39pm - Jan 15, 2010

Well i don't think any of you ladies above should wait to change your hair styles. You should invest in youself right now. A hair cut is not a good enough reward for when you have lost your weight. You should invest in yourselves right now and know that you are worth it. You have made a big step by joining the x-weighted challenge, now jump in with both feet and love yourself for what you are now and what you will become in 1month, 6 months and 6 years from now.

You Bet!

Do what will make you happy. I have taken to wearing make up again. It gives me a differant feel about myself that I have taken the time to prepare my looks. It been a long time coming.

When I feel good about the way I look (even just my hair and face) I feel better on the inside too. I therefore don't want any of that heavy food. I keep it light.

And what about curly girls?

Ysabel posted on Fred Connors Talks About Haircuts that Wow, Whatever Your Size @ 10:21pm - Jan 14, 2010

I've always wondered what is the best haircut for a curvy curly girl? Most of the time hairdressers won't event try to tackle a curly mane, and will usually suggest a cut which will require a lengthy operation with hair-dryer and flat iron to look like anything decent.
And there's always the worry to have too much volume there as well as everywhere else.
Any suggestion for the best shape and length to try to get?

Curly Locks

50andfab posted on Fred Connors Talks About Haircuts that Wow, Whatever Your Size @ 9:03pm - Jan 16, 2010

I have found that with my curly hair I like to have it just below the shoulder. It's not to long to pull the curls down and make your face look too long and it's much easier to handle.
You can wear it with natural curl for casual. Curler curl for dressing up and then pulled up and curled for anytime you feel a little flirty.
Too long a hair style with a large body seems to excentuate the size and drags you down. If you like it long go for layers, that way you keep the eye up where you want it on your face.

always liked the inverted bobs

I've always wanted a shorter hair cut, but never got brave enough to do it and I think it's because I'm thick around the hips/legs....I hope by the end of this challenge that I can acheive my goals, and feel good enough about my looks to come out from hiding behind the long hair!

Cant get happy with my hair

svancise posted on Fred Connors Talks About Haircuts that Wow, Whatever Your Size @ 8:01pm - Jan 10, 2010

I hope once i finish my journey i will be able to get a hair cut that keeps me happy. Once i start losing weight i hope to see my face become skinner and i will be happier with my hair. I never thought having extra weight would affect the way i feel about my hair but it sure does explain alot. I hope to change this feeling though!
