Fred Connors Explains why You Need to Clear the Clutter from Your Home
When you look at extreme cases of clutter, it becomes a psychological diagnosis - there are some people that are just so fixated on collecting stuff and have a huge problem with letting anything in their life go. They become hoarders and they live surrounded by clutter. Those people are extremely emotionally dysfunctional, and often have weight related issues too.
The Relationship Between our Home and our Self-esteem
Our homes are a reflection of who we are, and if we feel that we do not have control of our own bodies, often we do not have control of our environments also. It is really easy to see that when people have lost faith in their ability to control themselves physically, they have often also lost the desire also to live in an environment that is indulgent, or nurturing, or safe.
I think that when we feel good about ourselves, we feel like we deserve comfort.
Our thought patterns go like this: When you feel like you are a special person, you feel like you deserve a nice home to live in. When you are a thin person, you deserve to be able to go home and feel good about yourself. When you are a happy person you deserve to have these nice things in your home that remind you of how happy you are.
When you are feeling absolutely miserable about yourself, I don’t think that you can walk into a room and really have that room make you feel any better, and I think that people let their physical spaces go because they are so disconnected from themselves – not just physically but emotionally.
People who care about themselves emotionally, care about the way walking into a room makes them feel. People who are completely disconnected can walk into a room that is totally chaotic and not even see what happening.
The Need to Feel Worthy
I have met participants and gone into their bedrooms and seen physical spaces that didn’t look hospitable for anyone to sleep in, let alone feel nurtured or romantically inclined. Take Kristi, from season 3, for example – this was a woman who was really struggling with relationships and feeling very lonely. Because she didn’t have a man in her life, she didn’t feel like she deserved to have a bedroom that made her feel good when she went in it.
I think that a lot of people feel that they need to somehow be worthy of having nice homes or environments that make them feel good. If you are overweight or unhappy with your life and do no not feel worthy, that extends into your home and the way that you live. Why bother putting out the garbage, or tidying up the living room, or cleaning the bathroom when you just feel like a fat piece of crap all the time? A clean bathroom isn’t going to make you any thinner.
I think that this is how a lot of people feel. You lose hope and you feel like you are losing control over your own body, you let the control over everything else go as well.
Taking Control of the Chaos
How do you deal with it? You decide that this is not how you want to live, and take control of one thing which then allows you to take control of another, and then another, and another and so on. If we function through life by losing control of everything, you may as well just give up.
If we can take control of one thing, even if that thing is just organizing your kitchen, and then another, and that is getting rid of garbage you don’t need, then the next step is going to the market and buying a couple of candles and putting them on a table and treating yourself to some ambiance then you start to feel special.
When you treat yourself like crap your whole life and tell yourself that you are not worthy, you start to believe it. But when you start doing the opposite, and tell yourself and treat yourself like you are worthy, by taking control of things, you may not immediately be able to lose 30 pounds of fat, but you can immediately lose 30 pounds of junk from your life no problem.

My husband and I are planning
My husband and I are planning a purge tomorrow afternoon. I feel so out of control when my space isn't tidy.
The first thing I do every
The first thing I do every morning, and have my whole life(thanks mom!), is make my bed. It makes going to bed every night more enjoyable. It may sound silly, but if you don't do it, start now!!! It will make a difference.
I need this
Clutter does hurt all aspect of life but I have so much clutter that it seems that there is no place to start. While I know that whereever I start it is a start.
OMG!
I joined xweighted only yesterday and last night was my 1st night at the gym. It's 12:30 pm and I've already dusted my living room & wiped down my kitchen cupboards (inside & out) and there are no dishes in the sink!!!! Whereas, the past couple months I've had things cluttering up everywhere from end tables to YA where I couldn't even see the top of my kitchen table!!! ONE evening of working out has clearly got some things running in my brain!! lol...I'm loving it & I PRAY I stay positive :D All the best to all of you :D
unorganized
Fred is right. When I dont feel right, everything around me is cluttered and I dont eat right either. I also believe that eating right takes organization. I am a mom of 3 and on weeks that my menu plan is done, everything goes well and weeks that I dont do it...I gain 3 pounds!!!!!!!!!!
SO TRUE! Trust me, he is
SO TRUE! Trust me, he is right on the money with this. Being organized, tidy and in control carries over into every part of life. My bedroom certainly proved that!
So True
Yeah, I agree, that's how I feel. I have always been a well organized person but I became less organized when I started gaining weight. I will change that now. I'll start decluttering this week-end!
True true true
I never really thought about it before, but the people in my life who exercise regularly and watch what they eat do have cleaner homes. And actually, as I'm beginning to feel a little better about myself, I definitely have been taking more initiative to keep my home clean :)
Interesting
I don't have a clutter problem at all but it's because I work at it pretty hard. I can't think in a cluttered environment. Paper is the hardest for me to control. I work at a paper-intensive job and sometimes I think we should be forced to go out and actually hand-cut all the trees we consume in paper. Maybe then we'd quickly change our practices! Not to mention my upper body strength would improve a lot!
I think that a lot of clutter is due to over-consumption, that's where I see the parallel between clutter and unhealthy living behaviours. We're urged to acquire more and more, but we don't manage all that "stuff" very well. You see all kinds of initiatives to promote recycling, but not very many that urge us to consume less in the first place.
organized on the button
That is soooo very true!!! Now will someone come and help me clean up my kitchen....I would so much sooner go for a walk or go to the gym then clean
re; organized on the button
Michelle, You made me laugh so much with your comment! I needed that today.
you guys are psychic
How did you know? I just finished purging my linen closet and the spare bedroom. Three bags of blankets and sheets we'll never use, and a bag of clothes, to go. Off with the weight, away with the other stuff I don't need.
And I haven't finished yet!
Wow
This really strikes home. How come I never noticed that when I am eating healthy and working out that I keep less clutter around my house? All of my clothes are put away, I start making my bed and I can find the top of my kitchen table. When the good habits in my diet and lifestyle fall away I just can't be bothered to put my clothes away, make my bed and I can't find my kitchen table to eat at it.
Good points Fred, you really know your stuff.
