Foodie Tuesday: Think Twice About that Iced Coffee

coffffffwwwwWhen it's warm outside, who doesn't want to slurp on an iced coffee? Be careful though, there's a reason why those drinks go down so easily: they are often packed full of sugar and fat. Here's the skinny on iced-drinks from Canadian chain restaurants...

Tim Hortons

Love those Iced Capp Surpremes? Be careful, having just one could use up a fair bit of your calorie allowance for the day (and won't do much to curb your hunger). An Iced Capp Supreme Butter Caramel (small size, made with cream) contains a whopping 320 calories!

A regular Iced Capp isn't quite so bad - a small one made with milk contains 150 calories, and a small iced coffee (made with milk, not cream) only has 70 calories. Tim Hortons has a really good nutritional calculator on their website to help you make better choices.

Starbucks

The gut buster at Starbucks would be a 440 calorie Grande Java Chip Frappuccino or Grande Double Chocolately Chip Frappuccino at 410 calories.

An iced coffee or iced skinny latte only has 60 calories, and there's a handy list of the lowest calorie Starbucks beverages on their website as well as nutritional info for everything else that they serve.

McDonalds

A large iced coffee at McDonalds has 240 calories (the vanilla and caramel versions both come in at 230 calories), whereas the small version has 120 calories (110 for vanilla and caramel). Agan, theres a useful nutritional calculator on the company website.

Cold Stone Creamery

This pit stop offers 2 of the most calorie laden iced coffees available: The Raspberry Truffle Mocha Latte and Vanilla Cream Latte (in the "gotta have it" size) both contain 520 calories.

A Lite Iced Coffee (in the "Like it" size)only has 60 calories. For nutritional info on all Cold Stone Creamery products, click here

Wendy's

A large Frosty-cino has 540 calories and a Coffee Toffee Twisted Frosty has 550. So if you're looking for a lower calorie iced coffee drink, you might want to try elsewhere! Nutritional info for Wendy's products can be found here.

I've never tried the flavour versions, and now that I read this I never intend too anyways. I can only drink a small size and have never managed to finish a bigger size of one.

interesting ....

i'm surprised that an ice capp is only 150cal - that's probs no worse than a latte.

and i'm pleased to see that mcd's and timmy's make their nutritional info so readily available. so no one can actually say they didn't realise just how awful it was for them. yikes!!

Another recipe

Brew good, strong black coffee. Add 1-1 1/2tsp sugar or there abouts for 2 cups of coffee. Stir in sugar while coffee is still hot. Chill in fridge, serve over ice, if desired or put in thermal mug for a refreshing treat after work on the deck to curb the before supper munchies. A nice slightly sweet treat! No cream or milk required!! Yum!
