Foodie Tuesday: Make Sushi at Home
Aug 9, 2011
When it comes to clean eating, sushi is a really good choice. Many people don't realize just how easy it is to make sushi at home. With very little equipment you can roll your own California rolls or other healthy sushi combos. Here's what you'll need, and some simple instructions to get you eating clean Japanese style at home in no time:
Ingredients
- 1 cup medium grain brown rice
- 1/3 cup of rice vinegar
- 1 tbsp sugar
- Package of nori (sheets of seaweed)
- 1 avocado, sliced into thin strips
- 1 cucumber, sliced into thin strips
- Sesame seeds
- Crabmeat or whatever other healthy ingredient you want to include in your sushi roll
Directions
- First, prepare the rice. Cook the rice (this can take up to 40 minutes so give yourself plenty of time if you're planning to make sushi for dinner) and then put it in a large bowl and mix it with the rice vinegar and sugar.
- Lay a piece of nori smooth side down on your bamboo mat. Spread some rice across the nori, so that the seaweed is completely covered by a thin layer of rice. You can sprinkle this with sesame seeds if you so desire.
- Then lay a few slices of cucumber and avocado in a line across the rice. You can add the crab meat or what ever else you have decided to put inside your roll.
- Using the bamboo mat, start to roll the sushi. Start with the side closest to you and tightly roll the sushi away from yourself. When you have made a roll, use a sharp knife to slice into 8 pieces.
- Serve with wasabi and soy sauce. A bowl of edamame goes great with sushi, and makes a super healthy side dish.
This post is a repeat, but look forward to more original content to come in the future.

Wax Paper?
Wouldn't wax paper work in place of a bamboo mat? It's really just to give you a surface to roll the sushi, right?
any one can make sushi
My 12 year old loves to make and eat sushi. His favorites are carrots julliened, cucumber, smoked salmon, crab, avocado. Does anyone else have other ideas of fillings? I make the rice and he does the rest.

I once rolled sushi during a party when we ran out. It is that easy to do, folks loved watching the show and asked questions. Sushi is not only great to serve, and eat but apparently makes for great entertainment during a cocktail party!
Thanks for the recipe!
Now I'm hungry for sushi (and it's not even 8:30am here...)! Just wanted to add that 3 small pieces of sushi are a good afternoon snack -you don't necessarily have to make a meal out of them. So if you prepare them the day before, it could be quite handy and satisfying.
I should add...
... that making sushi is so easy that I used to do it with kindergarten kids when I worked in an after school care program many years ago. It is THAT easy!
Domo arigato (Thank you in Japanese)
for the recipe. I love sushi and it makes a nice meal. Haven't tried to make it myself yet but I am will to give it a roll.
sushi
had very few experiences with sushi but am willing to try as it sounds fairly easy
So easy
We make it all the time, very filling and each piece is roughly 65 calories depending how big the roll is. We like to make rolls with eel, carrots, celery, egg with a splash of soy sauce and a tsp of sugar, as well as a couple japanese spices we have.
Also, for ease in spreading rice on sheets of nori keep hands moist with water. For ease in cutting, keep knife wet.
My fiance is Japanese so she has a few tricks as well. She lightly toasts the nori on an open stove element to soften the seaweed and provide a slightly sweeter flavor.
I will have to try it
I have never had any kind of Sushi before but I could do veggies I hate fish! LOL!
Veggie Sushi
We eat veggie sushi all the time - adding in a little tofu or just veggies - grated carrot, mushrooms, etc. - DELICIOUS!
Bamboo mats
I have seen bamboo mats for sale in Loblaws on the back of the sushi counter. They have all the supplies to make sushi at home actually.
yum sushi
Been dying to make it at home... love love love sushi! Where does one get a bamboo mat though?
I found mine...
... at a Chinese grocery store, but I think any cookware store would have them.
