Being more active starts with just moving your body, and what better way is there to get motivated than through play? Here are 4 games that make exercise fun, and don't cost a penny.
1) Musical bumps
One person is in control of the music, with their finger ready to pause it at any time. Everyone else dances until that person pauses the music, and when they do, the dancers have to sit on their butts as fast as they can. Last one on the floor is out for that round and the game continues until only one person is left. (An easier variation is musical statues, where the dancers have to stand still instead of dropping to the floor when the music stops.)
2) Scavenger hunt
This is a super easy game to get your kids moving outside, and can be played either in the back yard, local park or anywhere at all. Create a list of items that each child (or parent and child team) must collect in order to complete the game, then see who can collect all items the fastest. These items could be anything from a certain kind of leaf, a heart-shaped stone, a shell, whatever you can imagine that could be found at the location you are heading to. With a very small amount of planning, you can create a game that brings out a sense of adventure and wonder in your children.
3) Hand soccer
Grab a ball, get outside and play this fast-paced variation on a classic. Divide yourselves in to two teams, and create two goals. Using your hands, you need to guide and slap the ball in to the opposing team's goal. Rules are that you mustn't use your feet or legs at all, if the ball hits your legs or feet the opposing team wins a point! This works well with just four people, but get more people involved to up the pace.
4) Sock wrestling
Go one-on-one with your kids in this fast, fun and silly game. Competitors roll their socks half-way down their feet, get on their hands and knees and have to try and grab the socks off of their opponents feet. You aren't allowed to push or shove, just move fast to avoid having your own socks pulled off before you can grab your opponent's. If there are lots of people ready to play, turn it in to a tournament for a fun group activity.
This post is a repeat, but look forward to more original content to come in the future.
