Craving Taming Techniques
For those of us trying to watch our weight, cravings can be deadly. They attack us at our weakest times – mid-afternoon when we’re bored at the office watching the clock, when we’ve got PMS, when we are lonely or late at night. It can get so bad that you just have to give in!
The good news is, that with a little planning, you can beat your cravings. Here’s how:
Eat a varied diet. When we eat meals that are made up of one type of food, we may be more likely to crave what we aren’t getting later. Combining foods when we snack or eat meals is a great way to nix cravings. So don’t just grab a banana for a snack, have it with a little yogurt or a few nuts so that you are getting a combination of protein and fat with your carbs.
Don’t skip meals (especially not breakfast.) This is a big no-no. Make sure that you always have healthy meals and snacks available. Not eating breakfast, or a decent lunch etc., will make you hungrier when you do actually get around to eating and can push you in to poor decision making.
Out of sight, out of mind. The simplest way to beat cravings is to only surround yourself with healthy foods. You’re more likely to crave something if it is readily available. Knowing that there are cookies waiting for you in the kitchen will make you crave them!
Have healthy snacks on hand. When your craving attacks, try to distract it by eating a healthy snack. Carry fruit in your purse, keep it in the drawer at office or anywhere close by. (Click here for more healthy low-calorie snack ideas.)
Do an emotional check-in. Say to yourself, “Am I hungry or just stressed out?” and if you are stressed, go for a quick walk or call a friend rather than give in to your craving. Find alternative stress-busters.
Cave… sometimes. Making any food completely off limits is only going to make you crave it more. Indulge occasionally, but plan for it so that you are eating the thing you really love in an appropriate portion size.
