Blogging Your Way to Better Health

Whether you’ve got a specific goal to reach or just want to lead a healthier life, starting a blog could help you succeed. Marie Ainey, who lives in Toronto, has had her fitness blog "Mouseroo's Mumblings" since November 2006, and uses it to record her attempts to stay at her goal weight. "I started the blog because it was a great way to put out how I was feeling, get feedback and connect with people who identified with what I was going through," she says.

More than 300 people subscribe to Ainey's blog, and she says that she gets lots of feedback everytime that she posts. "You don't just get people saying "there there" when I don't do so well, they offer solutions and motivate me too," she says. Ainey says that she has developed many real life friendships through her blog, and had a group of fitness bloggers from Halifax visit her over the summer.

Jennifer Kennett’s blog, Diary of a Real Girl, chronicles her weightloss goals and the fashionable treats she buys herself when she reaches them. She says that the the network of online friends she has made through her blog are incredibly supportive. “My blog gets hundreds of hits every day but in reality I live in a small town (Fort McMurry, AB) where I might only talk to three people in a day,” she says, “the girls I’ve met online are the first to say congrats when I succeed and the first to kick my butt when I don’t.”

Thousands upon thousands of Canadian women are blogging about their fitness goals and setting yourself up to join them is really very simple. There are sites that will host your blog for free, such as Blogger and Wordpress, both sites have simple instructions that will have you set up with a blog of your very own in minutes. For those who prefer economic prose to lengthy discourse, you can also try the latest craze, microblogging, on sites like Twitter where every entry you make (known as a “tweet”) can only be 140 characters long.

You can easily set up your own fitness blog here on the XWeighted.com site as part of the 26 Week Plan - click here to go to that section of My X-Weighted. Have fun!

I want to regain my power and self-confidence. I have gone from a healthy vibrant woman who was running half marathons, playing recreational soccer and feeling on top of the world to a woman who, through a series of setbacks, has become unmotivated, self-defeating and self-conscious. I hope this journey will move me forward to a new place of health and happiness.

go! go! go!

Just a word to give you some hope. don't know what the setbacks were but I do no something. After a few years of self-pitying and self-destroying and self-... put what you want in, I finaly was able to look at all my setbacks and find that I am actually a strong person because I did survive them. Some setbacks, I learned from and some just made me stronger (at least now that I'm able to look at them without the self-pity)
have a safe journey and do take care of yourself.

First week almost over

I tried as hard as I could, with a baby to take care, and I trained for 2h30 this week. I lost my first pound! (Well, I'm always runing to do the chores, take care of my baby, carrying her around the house and playing with her, so it counts as a workout too.)

I hoped my husband would join me, he even suscribed to the challenge, but so far, I do this almost by myself! *sigh

But anyway, I'm proud that I found some time to exercise, altough I have to get up at night for my baby, and I'm proud I lost my first pound! : )

Congrats to all of you... way to go !!! I'm joining officially today ... but I've started my weight loss journey on July 26th 2010. So far I'm 54 pounds lighter than I was previously...and a lot of inches gone as well... I have 37 more to go and I need everyone's help for the last run... I've been watching the show and listening to Paul's advice.. but I need to firm up now... I look like a bowl of Jell-O on two legs.. lol lol . Just by reading you guys I'm sure I will have the push I need to the finish line... Thanks in advance.. and I'll do my best to cheer you guys up as well...

I started my challenge today.

I feel very confident today that I will achieve my goal...but alas...its not 9pm at night yet and that's when I struggle. I struggle with eating just to eat and to fulfill that nightly eating habit I have.

I also tend to quit things I start because I think in my head that I won't be able to do it anyway. But I really want to succeed at losing this weight. Just to feel good about ME, to believe in myself and to believe that if I set my mind to something ...I can actually achieve it. I am tired of my self-defeating attitude. I choose today, right now, to believe in myself, to believe in a healthy lifestyle, to good choices and to positive supportive family and friends!!

Now, talk to me at 9:00 and I pray that I still feel the same way! LOL!

Hey Laura! I feel like I

Hey Laura!

I feel like I could have written this blog myself. I am the exact same way! I feel very confident now about that this time will be different from the rest, and I really hope that is true! I Think tracking our goals and target weight is a great way to stay on top of our goals. I see you joined on the 11th! How is it going 4 days later? Today is my first day! Good luck!

So Excited!!!

jtherrien posted on Blogging Your Way to Better Health @ 9:15pm - Mar 29, 2010

I am really excited for this journey! I have been overweight since I was 10! Being pulled out of every sport I ever started as a kid, didn't help much. My brother was in hockey and that just cost to much money, I was told. So I spent most of my time in front of a television. I had no friends so I guess food became my friend.
I have a small hand so I could not participate in a lot of school sports, and the teacher I had would not adapt it for me. I got a C in PE because the teacher said I did not apply my self. Well I can't play basketball with one hand.
There is no excuse for my gaining weight. It is all my fault. I could sit here and try and blame others, but that will not get me anywhere.
I had tried to lose weight through diet, or programs, but it has never worked. It is not that the program were bad, I just wasn't ready to do it. I think what finally got me here was seeing my sister gain tons of weight from her pregnancy and thinking to myself," I don't want that to be me". I want to have a routine and be healthy, so that when I have kids, I can gain what is appropriate and loose it after. To be an example to my children. To go out on an adventure somewhere and know that my kids will be okay.

I was 124lbs. at 5'5" ..I did triathlons and was really active. Now I do a bit of exercise..sit on the couch for weeks..do a bit..sit on couch for weeks..I have to break this awful cycle! So here I am..overweight and ready to do something about it! No more junk food..no more sitting at the computer filling my face with chips!!! Water is the way for me..this is going to be hard but it will be worth it so Ican get back to being me again.

This is my first time at blogging, but one of many attempts at weight loss! What is different this time? I'm trying to focus more on being healthy - exercise and better food choices. I've got 49 pounds to lose, and my goal is to run a 5K in May - I have never run before.

I was wondering if anyone has any helpful tips on how to stop evening/night snacking? I find I always want a snack before bed, whether I'm hungry or not, and I read that we should not eat 3 hours before bed. Any tips?

fitby50 posted on Blogging Your Way to Better Health @ 5:24am - Jan 18, 2011

Hi Shannon:

If you get any tips, you can share them with me since that's my problem too.
Last night I was determined not to snack after my supper. I went to bed a little hungry & a little uncomfortable & woke up this morning earlier & hungrier !!!!
Athough air popped popcorn has 180 ca. for 6c. as long as you don't add butter or anything. I bought some & some cheddar cheese flavouring that has 30 ca. for 2tbsp. So, if I have to have something I'll make the popcorn.

Good luck Shannon :)

well if you have a massive craving i think that the strict rule of no food at all after midnight is a little crazy. we know that if someone says that you absolutely can't, you're going to want it ten times more. that's when i think about what my mother would do when we were kids for a bedtime snack. if you want something just to satisfy a evening craving have half an apple if you have someone else to share the other half with or a small hand full of grapes! i think that as long as it's something nutritious ans its a small amount just to satisfy a craving, i certainly don't see a problem with it 2 hours before bed or just before turning out the lights.

Lets prove to ourselves and the whole X-Weighted community that we can do it!! I too want to get back into the pool, do some exercising but have to wait a month or so before I get back at it so in the meantime, I am walking 400 steps (Up and Down staircase) and plan to go back to Line Dancing this coming week (anything to help me move) and dancing is one of my favorite things to do, sooo... Love Affairs

Jesabel posted on Blogging Your Way to Better Health @ 1:18am - Jan 15, 2010

I love cookies.

I mean REALLY love them.

Not the store bought kind. The rich dark double chocolate chewy cookies Martha Stewart taught me how to bake. You know the ones, a double batch contains two & a half bags of semi-sweet chocolate chips, and two pounds of dark baker's chunks. There are other ingredients to above mentioned cookies, but who cares what they are. Inconsequential, really. What makes this love affair with a cookie unusual, is I do not even like chocolate!

I understand. I have never been one to do as I am told. Wanting what I cannot eat the day I start a weight-loss journey is typical Jesabel. It's as though I will prove I can eat 500 calorie cookies and still lose weight. I have to admit, I have given in. Three of those sweet succulent temptations, one per day. Have I lost weight, yes, definitely. Five pounds. That result makes me happy, obviously, but there is still that niggling in the back of my mind when I read the scale, whispering, wondering what my weight would be if I had just said no.

This love affair won't last, and I know next week those soft chocolatey cookies will be replaced. Maybe by streudel, pavlova, or perhaps I will finally find my heart's one true desire is really bean sprouts.

Mom Challenge

sheilakr posted on Blogging Your Way to Better Health @ 11:44pm - Jan 13, 2010

Challenges as a mom are unique to moms vs. dads, or single people. Not to say they are more difficult to face. But to say they may not be understood by dads and singles. I have heard it said that 'we' take no time for ourselves, which is true; but also, we really barely take time to breathe let alone think about working out. And if we do take time to workout, we feel guilty for taking time for ourselves. This makes it a different kind of emotional struggle. Personally, I'm spending too much time being selfless that i try to push out all the thoughts of what i need to do for my body, and make sure i don't forget to do everything else i need to do.

my mind goes constently about the children's activities, nutrition, exercise, school work, behavior, anxieties, coping skills, mittens, clothes, reading, appointments, safety, the vehicle, enough sleep, getting them to sleep. And believe me this is the short-list.

Really, when could we really fit ourselves into this equation. and we know there is no end to some of these things until they are on their own.

Further to this, i know that once i have reached my goal in this challenge, i will need to continue this regime for the rest of my life to maintain my weight. That is a very exhausting thought.

I'm loving my life, and my family, as well as all the blessings they bring!!!! That is why we keep on doing all of this, isn't it!!

Well, I just signed up today but I've been working on shedding my excess pounds for the past week. I've joined our fun weight loss group at work which we've nicknamed, Flight Fat Camp (we're a bunch of flight nurses). In the last week, I'm down 5.2lb and happy to be on my way to a healthier and happier me. I've got some friends and family on here who are also taking the challenge with me. It won't be as easy as it was to lose the 5.2 lb but I'm ready for the challenge. Here's to the new healthier me and best of luck to all of you committing to the challenge in 2010!

First Week is always the easiest!

Sher01 posted on Blogging Your Way to Better Health @ 6:47am - Jan 10, 2010

Ok so week 1 is over and I'm down 9lbs. Good start but its the long term, life style change that I never seem to stick with. I should have made my name Yoyo because that best describes me. I have never joined a gym or weight loss program because I refuse to give money to people for 1: common sense and 2: info I can get from research. I'm doing this with and for my daughter as well as myself. I hate the fact I don't take her swimming because I don't want to be seen in a suit. I also don't want her to not do something because she doesn't like how she looks. We have a wii we are doing together and are going for walks and skating this afternoon! Maybe my first goal should be to go to a public pool by May! Good Luck to everone out there!!

Good for you and your 9 pounds!

Your comment hit home for me when you said that "I refuse to give money to people " I have always thought that way too. There has always been other things to spend money on. I put more money into my truck for maintenance, than I put into my own health.

This year I said it's my turn, and Iam putting the money into me and my health.

I hope this change in my thinking will help me.

I have always preferred to

Jesabel posted on Blogging Your Way to Better Health @ 1:22am - Jan 15, 2010

I have always preferred to spend the $ on shoes :)

We Dance-Dance Revolution at our house. It's super fun, and since I am super competitive, I have to beat my daighters. They're 11 & 13, not as easy to conquor as they were when they were six!
