Activity Focus: Salsa Dancing
Brittany Watson first took a salsa dancing class in 2007, and fell in love with it. She has performed as part of the E-Town Salsa Dance Team, at various community events in Edmonton and teaches salsa classes (sometimes at bachelorette parties!). We asked Watson to give us the lowdown on taking up Salsa Dancing...
Brittany Watson and her dance partner Esteban GarroHow easy it is to start this activity if you have never done it before?
Very easy. In most cities there are community classes taught by professionals. Classes often have people of many levels, so there is room to grow as you get better. Salsa communities are big right now, so finding internet forums and meet-up groups is really easy. When you first start, you'll need to practice a lot and take your time, don’t try anything crazy at first. It takes a few classes to get with it, for everybody, no matter whether you have previous dance experience or not.
What would a beginner find challenging?
Dancing with a partner, and trusting other people you dance with is challenging: No matter if they are your spouse, partner, friend or stranger. It is challenging for beginners to start a new class, mentally as well as physically.
Would you need a basic certain level or fitness to start this activity?
No. It is one of those things that anyone could start. You can learn basic combinations and not be a top-level professional dancer. I think that anyone can do it without feeling too much strain.
What kind of workout does it give the body?
You get a great whole body workout. It is also great for your midsection because you are isolating your muscles while dancing as you learn to use your hips. After a couple of months of taking classes, you'll feel stronger and more coordinated.
What kind of equipment would you need to start doing this activity?
Stretchy pants, clothes you can move in, and comfortable shoes. They don’t have to be expensive, just something you feel comfortable moving around in. Try not to wear jeans, as they tend to get in the way as you move. Wear something you don’t mind sweating in because you will work up a sweat by the end of the class.
What are the costs involved in doing this activity?
Depends on where you decide to take a class, but for sure less than you would normally pay for yoga or a gym membership. Having said that, some gyms and fitness clubs have salsa classes as part of fitness activities. You can always just go to a salsa club, which is great because lots of clubs have a free class right before their salsa night starts. It is a great way to meet new people, and there will usually always be people to dance with.

Salsa
I think an actual class would make a difference because you would focus on doing it right. I did not find it easy to do and tended to fous on the other dancing concepts. Do the concepts in Latin dancing to most of them?
Not just Salsa
I've been talking Latin Line Dancing classes through my town's community activities for about a year now - no partner required! And you learn Salsa, ChaCha, Meringue (sp?), Bosanova - it's so much fun and it really does feel like a workout!
Zumba
I've gone to the new Zumba workout at Nubody's (Park Vic) - it's super fun... learning all kinds of dance steps .. . lots of wiggling and jiggling going on - I'm sure it doesn't look pretty yet - but once my waist line comes back... It's going to look great the way I will be able to move my hips. It's actually a great workout that you don't even realize you are getting because it's just such a hoot and sooo much fun! Wish there were more classes offered... I guess not enough teachers certified for it yet. Going from Lr. Sackville is a bit of a drive but it's worth it for a 'change it up' work out routine now and again!
Long drive
That is a long way to travel on a regular basis. Is it on very often and can you miss classes without feeling lost?
Zumba
I just started taking Zumba too. I go twice a week and I love it. What a great core workout. Its so much fun! Almost addictive!
Salsa classes
Your article is a great reminder that your exercise should be varied and foremost Fun.We are fortunate, in 2010, that if you live in an area that doesn't offer classes that you can purchase or sign-out a DVD from your local library.
great idea
I have been doing just exercise, but a few years ago I bought a dance exercise dvd, at the time I found it hard, but I believe that it will be easier now that I have been back into exercising again. I believe it has a salsa dance on it. I am going to incorporate this into my exercises. As they say exercise should be fun,or you wont keep doing it. Thanks for the ideas!!
Salsa dancing looks like fun
I have always wanted to take salsa dancing and my husband said he would go with me but we still haven't signed up. It would be a nice change from going to the gym all the time and to say that you can actually salsa dance would be nice.
I looks so nice.
My 11 year old sons school was in a ball room dancing competition. He enjoyed it soooo much. I would love to learn so I could dance with him.
Salsa dancing is so awesome
Salsa dancing is so awesome to watch which is exactly what my 2 left feet and I will continue to do but I am glad to hear that there is interest out there!
Never thought of Dancing
I guess it makes sense - but I definitely did not think about doing dancing to keep in shape.
What an awesome idea!
Having fun, while working out and looking great! :)
Thanks for the awesome idea!
I wish I could find a Salsa Class
Anyone in Calgary know where to go?
Wouldn't this be a fun way to exercise and have fun?
Salsa
I took a class a few years ago and it was definitely tons of fun! For those not into Salsa there are loads of other types of dance too... I'm a big fan of swing dancing. :)
Great idea!
I love this article!
While I live in a very rural area and there are no salsa classes it has motivated me to dance more. A few years ago a friend planted a seed about some type of dance she started doing called Ecstatic Dance for body and soul byGabrielle Roth. Of course I bought the DVD's (I buy everything then it collects dust) This article made me go seek the dvd's out and begin...
Thank you!
