Alex Chau got into running when he decided to train for the Vancouver Sun Run. He has been the floor manager of The Running Room, on Denman Street, in Vancouver for seven years and we figured he could tell us everything we need to know about running.
How easy is it to start if you have never tried running before?
If you haven’t been active at all you should do walks of 20 minutes to an hour just to get your body going. If you already workout occasionally, you can get right into a “learn to run” training program, which introduces you to the activity with running and walking intervals. From there you increase your running time very gradually from week to week. We start with 1 min running intervals and build it up from there.
What would a beginner find challenging?
If you can walk you can start to run - physically anyone can do it. It’s actually more challenging for the mind to complete each workout and running on your own is hard, so we encourage people to find a group or clinic to run with. The whole idea of starting any exercise or routine is that you are challenging your body to do something you haven’t done before. Sometimes it doesn’t feel that easy. But if you have a positive attitude it is much easier to keep going. Running is satisfying for both the body and the mind – so it’s worth it.
What kind of workout does it give your body?
It is a high intensity cardiovascular workout. It strengthens your lower body, but you are also building your upper body, core and your back. Running on a treadmill is easier, but I find that running outside you have better control of your speed. If you just slow down slightly you can actually keep going longer and longer and give your body a great workout.
What kind of equipment would you need to get started?
Properly fitted running shoes are essential. Go into a specialty running store, like The Running Room, to get help picking out the perfect running shoe. You also need to layer your clothing: base layer, mid layer and a breathable water resistant shell. As you get more into it you might want to consider a heart rate monitor that also measures speed and distance.
What are the costs involved?
You can’t run without good shoes and the basic cost would be $130-190 for a good pair. Running Room’s “Learn to run” program is $69.99 for ten weeks. Otherwise running is totally free! And if you are running in the cold then you need to consider the clothing costs as well. If you are planning to run at the gym on the treadmill then you will need to add that monthly fee or drop in rate.

What is running
Running has the context of fast. I think of running as a mile in under 8 minutes. I am certainly not there yet. It is one thing to do a few miles faster but I think the longer continuous activity has to be a start. Ironically to train stamina you go for shorter times and take breaks in between.
"support"
Okay, Ladies....how do you keep "the girls" supported when running? I am a DD cup and it is not fun to run.
Finding a sports bra
I can't really speak about running too much, but I finally found a sports bra that I really like to wear when I play and referee basketball. It comes from Moving Comfort. They have lots of options. I have no association with the company, but I was really happy to find something that works for size DD. The website is: http://www.movingcomfort.com
support
Hi there...I know what you mean...I'm actually a F cup so support is a very important thing. I actually went into a specialty bra shop and bought a sports bra there which helps. However I still found that it wasn't enough supports so I actually wear two sports bras...one with the underwire and then another tank style bra over top and of course the running tops also have their own shelf bras in them...so needless to say the girls are locked and loaded...haha!
Hope this helps.
Work in progress
I haven't got to the "I love to run" stage yet, I do hope to get there one day though. It seems to be more of a mental game for me. Somedays it feels like I can jog at a nice moderate pace for miles, and then other days I'm done after 10 minutes. Unfortch, the 10 minute days outweigh the miles and miles! Work in progress.....
Slogging
Do you ever have to go through a really slow pace to get going or to get through the last few minutes. Usually I find it to be necessary at the first and not at the last.
I love running!
I was one of those people who used to say "I don't run unless something is chasing me", then my trainer at the gym started me running and I LOVE it! My hubby just started the couch to 5k and he is enjoying it as well - hopefully it will become something we can do together!
I had an injury though and had to take a break...an important thing about running is LISTEN TO YOUR BODY. If it's consistently sore, go see someone and get it checked out - the place I went to was covered by OHIP for the original assessment, so if there's nothing wrong your peace of mind hasn't cost you anything!
I definitely recommend the Running Room programs, too. TONS of great information and guest speakers in addition to teaching you how to increase your distances safely.
we're trying to work out our differences
running and i .. yeah .. we don't really get along so well .. but we're working on it .. and you know what ..we're definitely fighting less ... there are actually days when i think .. hmmmm .. maybe i could learn to like this ... but i'm not quite at loving running yet.
trail running makes me happy. pavement pounding is not nearly has much fun
When you are on a treadmill
When you are on a treadmill what exactly is considered running speed and what is walking speed? Right now my workouts go anywhere from 2miles per hour to 4 miles per hour (wish my treadmill was in km per hour, would make more sense to me!).
Wohoo
I like running as well, I didn't used to before..but now I do. My fitness goal is to actually do a half marathon. I am not even close to being able to run that distance..YET..but soon will be...
I am excited!! Running is definitely a good thing if you are just starting out...cause you can set your own speed and distance to start and increase them as you get better :) Good luck to everybody on their running routines!
I'm at 5 km
The Globe and Mail has a nice guide being published on Thursday's to help you run a 10 km. It started last week I think. I am doing my run by doing a 6 min run followed by a 1 min walk and repeat until I reach 5 km. I did it tonight and I did my 5 km in 42 min. My goal is to do a 10 km under 90 minutes. Gotta build stamina. Good luck to and don't give up. Nicer weather and longer days will be with us soon.
I love to run
I really do :) I just started in the fall and I couldn't go more than 1 minute without dying, but now I can run about 6km and I'm not going to stop :)
love to run
I also love to run. good on you for going the 6km. I was at 5 k last year, now starting over. right now I can go 10 min with out stopping, then walk for 5, then rum for 10k, until I get to 5 K. once I can run all the 5 k, then I will increase to 6, then 7. It feels so good every .5 of a k to complete without stopping. What a feeling..my final goal to to runa 10k. good luck with your running.
